I've read a ton of books on money, investing, finance, you name it! And I'll be honest, there's a lot of fluff and "get-rich-quick" out there.
I know, because I've certainly fallen for a few of their tricks, especially in my young, dumb, and ugly days! :-)
But as the saying goes "search and you shall find." I've come across some real winners. Books that I can already say have saved or earned me at least $1,000+. And that's all within a couple of years of having read them.
The sky is the limit with these opportunities. I assure you they work, but only if you work them. Don't just read them, take action on them. It doesn't take rocket science, just a few simple disciplines...
Home Purchasing - Home buying is not your every day purchase. If you miss out on a 10% deal on a computer, you'll lose maybe $100. But when it comes to home buying, if you miss one little trick, it could end up costing you thousands of dollars without breaking a sweat.
Home buying is a huge purchase. It's the biggest single purchase you'll ever make. It's absolutely dumbfounding how few people will take 5-10 hours of their time to read a book that will save them thousands.
Reading home buying information that will save you thousands is like getting paid $200-500+ an hour just to read a book!
I beg you to become informed on the subject the next time you are about to purchase a home! I started with Home Buying For Dummies
but don't stop there. Pick up a mortgage book
too. This small investment in time will save you huge dollars, I promise.
Using Google Adwords - You may not realize it, but we are living in an age where the birth of the greatest advertising program in history is upon us. Never has it been easier to target only the exact type of person that you are looking for, and pay only when they view what you are selling.
You probably already know, Google makes billions of dollars every year from their search engine. But do you even know how? If you do almost any search, you'll see ads at the top or on the right side of the page. Every time someone clicks, Google earns money just for that click.
If you're selling a product, you can bid on certain keywords that people are using, and they will show up on Google's search results. With their reporting tools, you can keep track of how many people click, and how many of those clicks lead to sales.
It's basic math, and couldn't be simpler to use. But don't let it's simplicity fool you, there are hidden tips and tricks that you must know in order to really take advantage of this opportunity. That's because the competition is quite fierce.
If you're interested in this sort of thing, pick up the latest edition of the Definitive Guide To Google Adwords by Perry Marshall. Yes, the book is quite pricey (usually around $50). But it's worth its e-weight in gold if you really put forth the effort to apply what he is saying.
This is in no way get-rich-quick (although theoretically it is possible if you get lucky). I would only recommend this after you have a couple of years of experience in building Web sites and/or Internet Marketing.
Learn To Invest - Learning to invest is extremely important. No, it won't mean much for the first 65 years of your life. But when you retire, you'll likely be happy that there's an extra $2-5 million sitting there for you.
It's so easy to start investing. The problem is, and the reason a lot of people don't, is it's so easy not to invest!
Get educated on the subject of investing. Learn to set up an automatic deduction from your paycheck into your retirement account. If you don't know what a Roth IRA, 401K, Index Fund, and Lifecycle Fund mean, you absolutely must!
You don't have to be an accountant to understand this stuff! Although I will admit, some of the terminology can get confusing some of the time. So ask questions!
Anything written by John Bogle or any of the other "Bogleheads" as they like to be called is very informative. Unlike financial advisors, these people don't have a hidden agenda and are truly after your best interests.
Save Money On Taxes - I believe the saying goes some thing like, "There are only two certainties in this world, death and paying taxes." If you are living in one of most countries, you are probably paying taxes.
However, most countries, and especially in the United States (sorry, I live here!), they have what are know as "tax deductions". Tax deductions are not "cheating the system" or anything like that. The government wants you to succeed, especially when it comes to starting a business or being good at your job.
You're paying thousands of dollars in taxes every year, but there are many legal tricks out there that could, at the very least, save you a few hundred dollars every year.
And as you become smarter and begin earning more money, it will only help you save more and more money each and every year.
Hiring a top-notch accountant just isn't enough. You need to educate yourself so you know how to keep track of expenses throughout the year, and to point out things to your accountant so they can file your tax deductions properly.
Once again, this isn't nearly as difficult as it seems. Being tax-savvy can allow you to make smart and/or fun purchases (vacations, golf trips, going out to eat, etc.) and having the government pick up part of the tab!
Building An Online Business - OK, so the last one isn't quite a book on money, it's not even a book actually, it's an online business building system.
Have you always thought about starting your own business? Well, doing business in the offline world can get quite expensive. You would be hard-pressed to find an opportunity that was under $10,000 just to get started.
Introduce the Internet!
The Internet has a ton of business advantages that the offline world doesn't. It can be dirt cheap to start (at least compared to offline) and you can reach customers from all across the globe. I live in the USA, but only 55-60% of the visitors to this site actually live in the USA. They come from everywhere, India, China, UK, Canada, Australia, etc. etc.
The fact is, you don't need to sell products to make money on the Internet. With advertising, you can earn money when people click on an ad, or just have an ad sitting on one of your pages.
Building an online business is much easier than you think it is. It doesn't require any technical knowledge to begin. That is, of course, if you have the right tools.
