A Goal Setting Activity That Forces You To Think Well
|
|||
It's an activity that forces you to think like the top business people and entrepreneurs on the planet.
Here's how...
Imagine that your life is be perfect in every way, five years from now.
You have the money you want. You live where you want to live. You do the the things you want to do. Really take some time to visualize what that life would look and feel like.
It's OK if it takes you a few minutes to do this. In fact, it's normal. You may find it surprising, but many of us have no idea what we really want in life. We know that we want something different than what we have. But exactly what that is, most of us don't have the first clue.
Once you have given some serious thought into what your dream life will be five years from now, it's time to think back to your current situation.
What can you do now that will inch you closer to making that dream life a reality?
If there is one thing that I have learned from personal development, it's that nothing is quite as difficult as it seems. You may think that having this dream life is difficult or impossible, but a lot can happen over the course of five years.
I look back at the person I was five years ago and I'm amazed at how different I was. Shoot, I look back at the person I was two years ago and I'm blown away by some of the dumb decisions I made!
I say this because I don't want you to be afraid of how you are going achieve your dream lifestyle. For now, simply have the dream in your mind.
To help convince you that you can make your dream possible, I would like for you to do a little experiment. All it requires is pencil and paper. If you're feeling really confident, you can grab a pen. It doesn't matter.
I want you to use my favorite idea generator called mindstorming.
Basically, mindstorming is writing down a problem or question that you have. And then writing down at least 20 answers/solutions to what you have written down.
It sounds simple. But it's incredibly effective.
For our example, you would write at the top of a sheet of paper, "How can I live my dream lifestyle in [insert date five years from now]?" Below that, you would simply write 20 answers to that question.
Now, these answers don't have to be perfect. They don't even have to be very good to be honest. They simply have to be 20 things that would help you become at least a little closer to making your dream a reality.
This simple act of writing down solutions to your problems can be an amazing experience for you. All of a sudden, this dream life that you came up with doesn't seem nearly as impossible as it once did.
This is because you're staring at 20 actions that you can take to help you get there! You've come up with a blueprint that at least gives you a chance of making this dream a reality.
This is a fun activity that I believe is more than worth your time. If you want, you can share you're story of what your dream life is. I'd love to hear it. And it can give you a little motivation to get started!
Why This Goal Setting Activity Actually Works
If you are the type of person that likes to know why things work so well, this section is for you.
I've mentioned in previous articles about the success mechanism. It's an idea that I read about in the book Psycho-Cybernetics.
Basically, it means that inside all of us is a goal seeking ability. Once we have a target goal, we naturally have the ability to adjust as we go along until we reach what we have went after.
It's easy to think of it as a missile that is trying to reach it's target. It moves towards the target as efficiently as possible. Making constant adjustments along the way until it gets there.
This is the same way that humans behave towards goals that they have set. If you can imagine in your mind what your perfect life will be like five years from now, you will have something to move towards. You will start to take several small actions and correct course along the way.
Some like to call this the Ready, Fire, Aim approach. Whatever you want to call it, it works! I know first-hand!
This principle is also discussed in detail in The Strangest Secret In The World. I highly encourage you to listen to it if you haven't already. It basically says that the reason some people always seem to have that "good luck" and others don't is because of goals. And your perfect life five years from now is a pretty good goal to have!
The successful people are successful because they have a sense of direction. They aren't simply floating along with no clear place to go.
I promise that if you will give yourself a direction to go and create your dream life five years from now, you will start to notice that "good luck" seems to come to you more and more.
Try this activity right now. After all, it's not like it's that awful of an activity! Picture your life is perfect in every way in five years time. Remind yourself of the dream you have came up with. And start taking action that will move you towards making it a reality!
