The Best Idea Generator Ever Devised

It’s not easy coming up with new ideas. You know it and I know it. But what are you supposed to do if you are in desperate need of a new idea?

Over the years, I’ve read all of the books on creativity. The top two probably being Whack On The Side Of The Head and Thinkertoys. Now, I’m not going to say that these aren’t great books, but I will say that there wasn’t one particular tip in them that really stood out that I could turn to if I needed an idea.

And that’s when I learned about Mindstorming.

Mindstorming works as the greatest idea generator I have ever seen. I first learned about it in the book Goals by Brian Tracy. A great book by the way. I consider Mindstorming to be the single greatest way to come up with new ideas and solutions to your problems.

It’s incredibly easy to do. And it doesn’t take more than a few minutes of your time. However, it will have you pumping out ideas and thoughts that you have never came up with before!

How Mindstorming Works

First, grab a sheet of paper and a pencil (you can do this with a text editor but I wouldn’t recommend it). After that, write at the top some goal or problem that you are trying to find answers for. Write this in the form of a question.

For example, if I had a goal to become a millionaire in the next five years, I would write at the top of my paper…

How can I earn $1,000,000 in the next five years?”

Be as specific as possible when coming up with your question. Also, be very detailed on what you want and how soon you want it! After you have come up with the question you want solved, here is what you do next…

Come up with 20 solutions to your question. I know that sounds simple (and it is) but you’re not going to believe the power behind this.

Now, there are a few rules that you have to follow when you are coming up with your solutions. Every solution has to be written in the personal, positive, and present voice. Don’t worry. This is very easy to do.

As an example solution to the question above, we could say “start a business.” But that wouldn’t be in the personal, positive, and present voice. So we must say “I start my own business.” This may sound a little silly to do it this way. But writing in this form helps you visualize it more and makes it seem like it’s more real and obtainable. Here are a few other examples…

  • “I work two extra hours per day.”
  • “I work on only the most important tasks each day.”
  • “I delegate smaller tasks to other people instead of doing it myself.”
  • “I jog every morning so I will have the energy needed to do extra work.”
  • “I use Mindmapping every night before bed so I can come up with more ideas to reach my goal faster.” Etc. Etc.

You do this until you have 20 solutions written down.

Now, there’s one more rule to coming up with your 20 solutions. And this rule is the most important. It’s that you must come up with at least 20 solutions.

You absolutely cannot quit after you have 10 or 15 solutions. Mindstorming is only effective if you make it mandatory from the beginning that you won’t quit until you come up all twenty. You will start to notice that those first 10-15 solutions are very easy to come up with. It’s the last five or so solutions that really make you have to think. But here’s the thing…

It’s those last five solutions that often times gives you the idea that you need. Because it’s towards the end that you have to start thinking outside the box. Then the moment hits you and you finally figure out a way to accelerate quickly towards your goal.

Why Use Mindstorming

I’ve used Mindstorming time and time again and I can tell you that it really works. If you need ideas or you are stuck on a problem, than I highly recommend that you give it a try.

I know it sounds too simple and it sounds as if it really wouldn’t do that much. At least, that’s what I thought when I first learned about it. But then I tried it and I couldn’t believe the results!

If you have a large goal that you want to achieve, there’s some magical thing that happens when you start writing down solutions for it. I can’t explain it. I only know that it works. It makes the goal seem so much more possible. You look at the twenty solutions that you have written and you think to yourself…

“Gee, if I really do these things I might actually reach my goal!”

When you have this type of confidence in yourself it begins to attract yourself towards your goal. Once again, I can’t explain it but I know it works!

Don’t waste any time. Get at a sheet of paper and pencil right now and start your first Mindstorming session. Chances are, it won’t be your last!
