Online Writing Experiment Week One Update
January 27, 2009
It's been one week of my online writing experiment and I'm happy to say that it's still going strong!
Without a doubt, I have to credit my success to the idea of only making a goal of writing for
ten minutes a day. This is a goal setting idea that I believe I am going to be a loyal supporter of for a very long time.
Almost every day this week, the
little person inside of me was telling me not to bother writing today.
It
was telling me I didn't have time and that it would be better to simply
relax and check email instead. But then every day I realized...
Hey, I only have to write for
just ten minutes! I can handle that!
And
every day, this was the key thought that led to me getting my butt into
my computer chair and to start writing. As for the writing itself, I
was able to complete four pages during the week...

I have to say I'm very pleased with that figure. I'm well on my way
to the goal of writing 10 pages in my 21-day experiment. So that's a
good thing.
I've also found my
experiment trigger
to be very key as well. I decided that I would start writing every day,
immediately after I get done eating breakfast. So far, this has worked
brilliantly. Every day, it's automatic that I'm going to be hungry. So
making the commitment to writing after breakfast is slowly starting to
become automatic as well.
In the past, I've tried commiting to
finishing a page before I was allowed to eat breakfast. But for me,
hunger is a little too motivating of a factor. And I found that my
writing was very poor and I ended up cheating on that experiment
several times.
Writing Analysis
I don't have any real
stats or figures to report, such as how many minutes I spent writing or
other stats to show improvement. As mentioned before, I was able to
complete four pages.
I suppose if this was the perfect experiment, it would be beneficial to show hard data that I was improving.
All
I can say now is that getting onto the computer is getting easier and
easier. Although it is still more difficult then I would like. I
feel that I'm starting to get into the flow of writing a little more
easily. I have started to notice a considerable difference with that!
I will say this, my goal is to write a
minimum of ten minutes a day. Yet, every day except Saturday I know I have written for
at least 30 minutes each day. Some days I know I spent between 60-90 minutes writing.
So what happened Saturday?
I'll admit, I have a
long way
to go in my own personal development. On Saturday, I was only able to
write the absolute bare minimum of ten minutes. The reason was likely
due to Friday night, where I was introduced to a movie theater that
serves beer and pizza during the movie. And I'll have to admit, I had
quite a good filling of both.
So Saturday was spent doing a little more relaxing. Going shopping and reading instead of doing any extra writing.
But I did complete my 10 minutes of writing, and I didn't let it get to me that that was all I was able to accomplish.
For Next Week
More
of the same. I don't want to increase my minimum amount of minutes
required because I believe that is what has worked for me the best. And
I don't really feel like starting to track minutes or anything like
that. I just want to keep things simple.
Plus, the number of
minutes I write is irrelevant. It's all about output. How many quality
pages can I get written on a daily and weekly basis?
I'm hoping I can keep up this pace and get at least four done. I'm already off to a good start going one-for-one with this page.
Hopefully I can get a little more quality pages written by the end of the week.
