The Biggest Misunderstanding You Make With Money And Success

If you have never listened to The Strangest Secret, there is a small passage in it that will complete change your thought process towards money and success.

For me, it was truly one of those “ah-ha” moments that I had never thought of before that really changed my thinking. Now, I’ve already mentioned some important things that I learned from The Strangest Secret In The World. But the one thing that I learned about success that I am about to present to you deserves a unique discussion of its own.

So, what is it that the Strangest Secret taught me about money and success that I will never forget? It’s this…

Success is not the result of making money. No. Making money is the result of success.

Please read that again before continuing. Everyone seems to get this backwards! You see, first you become successful at providing a service. It’s only after that point that the money starts to come in. You can think of money as a yardstick. It’s there to measure how well you are doing your service.

This is the basics behind this valuable lesson. But let’s get into some more detail so we can understand it better.

First, what are we talking about when we say to provide a service? Well, that’s another thing that people don’t fully understand. You see, the only way (legally) to make money on this planet is to provide some kind of service…

  • the McDonald’s lady at the cash register takes your order
  • a secretary answers phones and does paperwork
  • a doctor provides medical help
  • Bill Gates has a company that provides software to people

It doesn’t matter what you do, big or small in this world to make money, you are providing a service to somebody else. Most people (myself included), take a long time to come to this realization. Unfortunately, there are some people who never come to this realization. Which might explain why they are poor and unhappy all of their lives. If you want to make a lot of money, it’s really quite simple…

Provide an excellent service to others!

Devote all of your time and energy to developing that service. Then, once you become really successful at doing that, only then will the money start to come in. How much money? Well, that depends on how good you are at providing your service!

Take a brand new restaurant as an example. Months of time and energy went into building it. Creating the menu, hiring the employees, etc.. All of this hard work amounted to a total of zero dollars in profits. Why? Because nobody is receiving any value.

Then, once the restaurant opens up, it starts to make profits. It’s set everything up to take maximum advantage of providing value to others. Now it’s time for it to cash in!

Once again, the restaurant had to be successful at providing value before anything else. The restaurant took the customer’s order. They then cooked the food and brought it to them. They were a success at providing their service. It’s only then that they receive their monetary reward. The money comes after the service.

If the restaurant takes in a lot of money, their service must be pretty good. If the restaurant goes bankrupt, their service must be terrible. It’s that simple.

All of this may seem like common sense, but I assure you, it isn’t. Nobody know the exact number, but at least half of the start up businesses in this world fail within the first year. If every one of them had provided an excellent service to others, that statistic wouldn’t exist!

So if you are planning to make a lot of money in this world, concentrate on value. Even if that means starting at your current job. If you want a raise, start providing more value to the company. If you help them earn twice as much as you helped them earn the year before, I guarantee good things will come your way.

If instead you are looking to start your own business, never forget rule #1. And that is satisfying your customers as much as you possibly can.

If you do that, everything else will take care of itself.
