The Secret To Cooking

Before I give you the secret to cooking, let me first give you a little bit of background information on my cooking career…

secret to cookingUp until college, my resume of things I could cook consisted of Pop Tarts, popcorn, cereal, and if I was feeling really crazy, peanut butter and jelly. It wasn’t until my Junior year of college before someone finally showed me how to even use a can-opener.

After I got my first apartment, I improved my cooking skills somewhat. I could now add burgers, quesadillas, and even pancakes to my list. I was far from being a top chef, but I felt like I was getting better…

Then I became, what I would consider, the typical household cook. I could follow simple recipes that I found in cookbooks to make chicken, pork, or any other type of meat. The food tasted good enough to get the job done. But I wanted more. I wanted recipes that were absolutely delicious and would blow my taste senses out of this world!

When The Secret Hit Me

I’ve always enjoyed eating out. Who doesn’t really? I dreamed more than anything to prepare meals that tasted just as good as those incredible restaurant meals. Then it hit me…

I was walking through a bookstore one day looking at cookbooks and stumbled across one that I found very interesting. I can’t remember the exact title. But it was something along the lines of “Secret Restaurant Recipes.” Quickly, I scanned through the book finding meal after meal that I absolutely loved having at restaurants. But, I never thought in a million years I would be able to get the recipe for it. Yet, here it was right in front of me.

Well as it turns out, finding restaurant recipes is way easier than you might think! After finding that book, I went online to do some searching. As it turns out, with nearly every great meal that you eat at a restaurant, you can easily find the exact (or very similar) recipe online.

All you have to do is type in the name of the meal, plus the word recipe, into your favorite search engine and there it is! For example, I really loved Alice Springs Chicken from Outback Steakhouse, so all I did was type in “alice springs chicken recipe” into Google.

The recipes that you find are often the exact recipes that are used in the restaurants. They are often posted by people that have worked there or have grabbed a hold of the recipe from somewhere. Even if it may end up not being the exact recipe, it’s usually so close that you won’t be able to tell the difference!

Some restaurants themselves post a few of their recipes online. I did a search for an Olive Garden recipe that I wanted, and as it turns out, their official site had it right there. It even had a video of one of their chefs making it!

Two Things That Will Surprise You About The Secret

There are two things that I have found surprising about finding restaurant recipes online and cooking them…

The first, and most important, is that some recipes are not nearly as complicated as you may think! Often times, cooking them consists of throwing the meat and a few ingredients into a bag the night before. Then taking them out of the refrigerator and cooking them for 10-20 minutes whenever it’s dinner time.

You’ve read my cooking history. Believe me, if I can do it, you most certainly can!

The second thing that has surprised me is just how much it tastes like the real thing. When I first started cooking with restaurant recipes, I expected it to be good, but not nearly as good as the real thing. This turned out to be completely wrong. You can barely tell the difference! The only thing different is you don’t have a waiter, and you don’t have a big bill at the end!

One thing you may want to consider after you’ve cooked a recipe successfully a couple of times is experiment a bit. Add an ingredient or two. Try making it taste even better than the restaurants version. Or, if you’re like me, you might want to try making it a little healthier by cutting down or eliminating some of the high calorie ingredients.

Nevertheless, it’s really exciting knowing that you can cook meals that taste every bit as good as your favorite restaurant. I promise that you have everything that it takes right now to cook these wonderful dishes…

…and this is coming from someone who couldn’t use a can opener until they were 20!
