Why Checking Your Email Takes Two Hours

Here is something that people do on a daily basis

They have some kind of work that they need to get done on the computer. It may be a paper they have to write. Or maybe something else business or work related. Whatever it is, this work usually falls under the category of “not extremely urgent but definitely needs to get done.”

But before they get started, they decide to go check their email. Checking your email is an activity that should take about five minutes at the most, but it doesn’t…

From there, one of their emails has a link to it that they go to. It’s usually something completely stupid and time-wasting. Then on that site, they see something else interesting that they go to. This link is equally wasteful.

Once they get to this stage there is no turning back. They have reached their casual routine that they get themselves into every day. They then go see what is new at their favorite sites. Nothing is usually new, but they check anyways.

During this time, they check their email two or three more times. Once again, they usually don’t get anything new. But it gives them something to do for a few seconds.

Before you know it, one or two hours has passed and they never get started on what they were set out to do.

Does this sound anything like you?

I’m sure you’ve done this over and over again whether you realize it or not. This habit is probably so ingrained in you that it seems like an ordinary and everyday routine.

Remember this the next time you complain about not having enough time? I know I certainly used to complain about that a lot. Then I realized just how much time I wasted surfing the Internet at sites that were of no good use to me. Once I became aware of my bad habit, I immediately started getting more work done and my days were much more fulfilling.

What You Should Get Out Of All Of This

The important thing to understand is this…

Whenever you waste your time on something, it almost always leads to wasting your time doing something else as well. The Internet is probably the easiest activity you can do to waste time. It ranks right up there with TV.

If you feel as if there isn’t enough time in the day to get work done, take a serious look at what activities you are doing on a daily basis.

How much time do you actually spend online just surfing? How much time do you spend watching television shows that are simply garbage and have no benefit to you?

It’s truly amazing what you can get done in one day if you block out all of the wasted activities that you do. Successful people find a way to avoid all of these distractions. You likely won’t find a CEO who has ten different shows that he/she watches every week.

They have more important things to do.

Action Steps

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t browse the Internet or watch television. You are free to do whatever you want with your time. Although I would suggest that you try to cut back on these activities as much as possible.

What I am suggesting to you is to avoid these activities when you need to get work done.

If you have a project that needs to get done, have a reward when you get finished be an email check. This takes incredible discipline on your part at first, but once you make it a habit you will think nothing of it.

Be aware that if you decide to waste a few minutes before getting to work, those few minutes are going to lead to several minutes if not hours of wasted time. This, my friend, is what you need to understand…

There is so much time in one day for you to get tons of work done. More then you can possibly imagine. If you are consciously aware of how much time you waste, you can start finding ways to correct your mistakes.

Jump right into a project without putting it off. Don’t spend a few minutes checking your email or doing something else useless. It will lead to disaster as far as your project is concerned.

You have everything it takes to outwork the people around you. Let them waste all the time they want. By getting in the habit of diving right into a project, you have no idea how much of an edge this will give you over everyone else.

If you are self-employed or work on commission, you will quickly find yourself making more money then you ever thought possible. Your stress levels will go way down because you will be getting projects done and making more sales much faster. And most importantly…

You will have incredible confidence in yourself. Knowing that there is nothing that you can’t get done. You will be unstoppable.
